Enligt en populär skröna skulle Bernadotte ha haft en tatuering med orden "Död åt kungar". Detta är troligtvis bara en skröna; däremot uttryckte sig den framtida kungen 1797 på följande vis: ”Republikan både av princip och övertygelse vill jag till min dödsstund bekämpa alla rojalister.”.
